At least 4 protesters have been killed during confrontations between law enforcement and demonstrators since the electoral process on 12 October, with the 92-year-old head of state securing an eighth presidential mandate. The opposition leader asserts that he won the election, a statement disputed by the governing party, the CPDM. Forceful measures by security personnel on demonstrators have worried the global community, with the UN, AU and European Union demanding caution. Minister's Allegations Earlier this week, Nji alleged Tchiroma Bakary of coordinating what he described as "unlawful" rallies causing the deaths, and also rebuked him for announcing success in the presidential race. He added that Tchiroma Bakary's "co-conspirators involved in an insurrectionary plan" will also undergo judicial processes. Vote Outcome The president, who came to power in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, secured the 12 October vote with over half of the votes, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to the constitutional court. Opposition Response Tchiroma Bakary is has not yet commented to the government's decision to try him, but he had earlier stated that he rejected a stolen vote - and that he was fearless of being detained. When results were announced, he said that gunmen opened fire on protesters assembled near his residence in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least two civilians. Inquiry Announced Recently, the interior minister announced that an inquiry would be started into unrest prior to and following the declaration of the poll figures. "Throughout the violence, some of the perpetrators lost their lives," he commented, without giving a exact count of protesters who have been fatally injured in the incidents. Nji added that a number of personnel of the police and military also received significant wounds. Current Situation Even though Nji insisted the condition nationwide was now manageable, protesters are still demonstrating in some parts of the nation, especially in these two cities, where protesters established roadblocks on Tuesday, and burnt rubber on the streets. Experts caution that the election-related unrest could lead the nation into a governmental instability.
