We are checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow. Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing. The initial step to verify the location of where the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia. We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage. Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured. Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
