Biding two decades for another chance to secure a prized business acquisition is a privilege not available to most business leaders. The Harmsworth dynasty, however, adopts a more patient approach to time. Whereas the majority of corporate boards create short-term strategies, the family, having compiled a formidable media empire over more than a century, are used to planning in terms of decades. A Long-Awaited Bid It was in the summer of 2004 that the 4th Viscount Rothermere, the tall, curly haired owner of the Daily Mail, failed in his bid to acquire the Telegraph titles. By Rothermere’s assessment, the setback pleased Rupert Murdoch because it would have established a stable of conservative newspapers powerful enough to rival the “unique political leverage” of his publications. The reserved Rothermere, though, was able to adopt a patient strategy. The Telegraph titles were once again offered for sale in 2023. From that point, two potential buyers have come and gone, both after internal Telegraph revolts over their appropriateness. Rothermere has now made his move. Family Legacy As a result, the fifty-seven-year-old has reaffirmed his dynastic passion with UK press, after his ancestors bought, sold and smashed together some of the biggest titles of their era. “He possesses business acumen, though not in a cutthroat manner,” said Alex DeGroote. “This sounds a bit cheesy, but he’s genuinely passionate about journalism. “I believe they have long aimed to consolidate media outlets catering to centre-right readers.” Significant challenges persist before the hereditary peer’s corporate entity can clinch the titles. In addition to regulatory and diversity issues, Telegraph insiders are asking how he will provide the half-billion-pound price tag. Nevertheless, his aspirations of creating a right-leaning media giant have been rekindled. Behind the Scenes This constituted a audacious move for a proprietor who takes pride on remaining out of the public eye, often noting his readiness to let the combative opinions of the Daily Mail contradict his own gentler, more pro-European conservatism. With the Rothermeres, though, media acquisitions are a family affair. A portrait of Alfred Harmsworth, his ancestor who established the Daily Mail in 1896, dominates Rothermere’s office. He remembers the stress of the intense competition in 1987 between the London Daily News and his family’s Evening Standard, which he eventually divested. Rothermere himself dabbled in journalism, serving as a editorial staffer on the Sunday Mail in Scotland, before concentrating on the business side of his family’s group. Upon his father's passing in 1998, Rothermere is said to have had about 20 minutes upon arriving back from the hospital before business communications began, effectively commencing his chairing of DMGT, aged 30. Business Direction In the past, he sold off profitable parts of the business to refocus on the Mail and additional press holdings. This latest offer is the most recent indication of his eagerness to consolidate the family’s media stronghold. “This is a 20-year plus target acquisition,” commented a former DMGT executive. “He doesn’t want the Mail as the only newspaper asset he leaves for his son Vere.” His choice to take DMGT private in 2021 has also made the Telegraph pursuit easier. “I don’t have to justify myself to anybody,” he said soon after the decision. Editorial Independence Intervening to change the Telegraph’s politics would be uncharacteristic. An ex-editor informed that both he and his predecessor meddled in content. “That is the main reason why I turned down very enticing offers to edit the Times and the Telegraph,” he said. “Frankly, I simply didn’t believe that other proprietors would give me that freedom. It’s difficult to overstate how valuable that freedom is to an editor.” He continued, “Fleet Street is littered with the corpses of sacked editors who, amid crashing circulations, tried to please their proprietors rather than their readers. The Rothermeres have always understood that. It’s a sacred principle for them that editors are given total editorial autonomy, with the brutally clear understanding that they are dismissed if they produce poor papers.” Regulatory Scrutiny Amid the UK's political landscape appearing to shift to the right, there are predictable apprehensions about uniting the Mail and Telegraph at a juncture when both have been increasing coverage of a right-wing political movement. Many liberal politicians believe the Mail’s abrasive style has become more pronounced in recent times, pointing to its championing of talking points pushed by the political leader on immigration and the “progressive” agenda. Some believe the Telegraph has experienced an more extreme transformation, frequently publishing radical-right opinion pieces that go beyond those of the Mail. Financial Questions Many queries remain about how someone even with Rothermere’s assets has the cash. Most media analysts believe that a more realistic price tag for the publications is in the range of £350m, but Rothermere is prepared to pay a premium. DMGT does not have a available £500m, the sum apparently insisted upon by the existing owners as they seek to recover the loan that secured ownership of the titles previously. Long-Term Outlook Rothermere has promised to maintain the Telegraph and Mail titles independent in content, viewing them as serving different audiences – quality and popular press. Nonetheless, there are concerns inside both titles over cuts and the future strategy, given the state of the press sector. Again, the family has demonstrated a willingness to take drastic action when required. When Rothermere’s father was attempting to save an ailing Daily Mail in 1971, he merged it with the Daily Sketch, dismissing numerous staff in the process. Approval Process The culture secretary has requested that the involved parties submit the proposed deal to the government within 21 days, but the remaining challenges will mean the process rumbles on well into next year. “A company that owns the Mail and the Telegraph would have the scale to give both papers a better chance of surviving,” noted an industry veteran. “But, even then, such a company would be a pygmy compared to the giant internet platforms and the BBC from whom most people today get their news.” Vere, thirty-one, Rothermere’s heir, is already being prepared to assume leadership of the family empire, occupying a senior role in DMGT’s media business.
