Burns adds: “Truly, this might be the most exceptional group recruited for any project. They do an extraordinary service. Their celebrity status wasn’t the criteria. I became frustrated when someone asked, about the prominent cast. I explained, ‘These are artists.’ They represent global acting excellence and they vitalize these narratives.”

Multifaceted Story

However, no contemporary observers remain, visual documentation required the filmmakers to rely extensively on primary texts, combining individual perspectives of multiple revolutionary participants. This methodology permitted to present viewers not only to the “bold-faced names” of the revolution along with multiple crucial to understanding, several participants never even had a portrait painted.

The filmmaker also explored his personal passion for territorial understanding. “I love maps,” he comments, “featuring increased geographical representation in this film than in all the other films I’ve done combined.”

The film maintains, transcended provincial conflict concerning territory, taxes and political voice. Instead the film portrays a blood-soaked struggle that eventually involved more than two dozen nations and unexpectedly manifested what it calls “mankind’s greatest hopes”.

Initial complaints and protests aimed at the crown by American colonists throughout multiple disputatious regions soon descended into a brutal civil conflict, pitting family members against each other and neighbour against neighbour. During the second installment, the historian Alan Taylor observes: “The main misapprehension regarding the Revolutionary War centers on assuming it constituted that unified Americans. It leaves out the reality that Americans fought each other.”

For him, the revolutionary narrative that “generally suffers from excessive romance and idealization and is incredibly superficial and doesn’t have the respect actual events, all contributors and the widespread bloodshed.”

The historian argues, a movement that announced the revolutionary principle of fundamental personal liberties; a vicious internal conflict, separating rebels and supporters; and a worldwide engagement, another installment in a sequence of wars between imperial nations for dominance in the New World.
